First Monday this month is Labor Day and as has been the norm and standard, the Coordinating Council’s First Monday meeting moves to the adjacent Tuesday.  In this case, tomorrow, September 7, at Bill Reiswig’s house.  Time is 7:00 to 9:00 for the CC meeting, come earlier for socializing and sharing food and company.

Spokespeople West Seattle rides again to visit and shop at West Seattle’s newest farmers market at Highland Park. We will also be riding to the original West Seattle farmers market at the Alaska Junction and finish the 11.67 mile ride at the West Seattle PCC. Bring currency and safe and sturdy cargo carriers. Support your local Urban Farmers.

This ride is characterized as “easy” with some hills for a total distance of just under 12 miles.  The Spokespeople rides are “stay together” rides which means the riders keep pace with each other and wait for tail riders when the route changes direction.  In the event of rain, the ride will NOT be cancelled.

Eat Local Now! Dinner will celebrate it’s seventh year running on September 30th, 2010! Always a sell-out, this year Sustainable West Seattle, West Seattle CoolMom, Seattle Good Business Network (formerly BALLE Seattle), and Herban Feast are co-presenting this fundraising dinner.

This year’s event is focused not only on promoting and educating about local food systems – but also turning local food systems into local food economies and development of green jobs.

The dinner will take place at  Herban Feast’s SODO Park location on First Avenue at 3200 First Avenue South, cross street is S. Hanford St.

Local singer/songwriter Ali Marcus will be playing original tunes and her interpretations of well-known classics beginning at 6:00 pm.  To see Ali in action, check out the videos on her myspace page - www.myspace.com/alimarcus.

Applicants are must live within the SWS neighborhood (all of West Seattle and unincorporated King County West of the Duwamish river, and North of Burien), and submit the following information via email to brian@sustainablewestseattle.org before 5:00 pm on September 1, to be considered for the scholarships:

1. Full Name, Street Address, Phone and Email
2. A brief (less than 500-word) explanation of:

• What experience you already have with Permaculture & Gardening;
• Why you are interested in attending the Permaculture Convergence; and
• How you intend to apply what you learn there (especially if you have a specific project in mind).

Winners will be selected by the SWS Coordinating Council Executive Committee, and announced on or before Sept 3 at 12:00 noon. Any questions about the scholarship process should be directed to brian@sustainablewestseattle.org.

Alki Kayak/Mountain 2 Sound will provide kayaks and longboards and Alki Bike & Board will bring 3 electric bikes for demo and play!  Borrow one of the electric bikes and ride up to Lowman Beach Park and catch a longboard ride back on the Sound.

Did you know that it’s OK for you to raise honeybees in the city of Seattle?

Having your own bee hive means that your garden will be very well pollinated, you’ll have a lot of fun, and probably end up getting more honey than you know what to do with.  It’s a very rewarding hobby, and will forever change the way you see the insects around you.  So what does it take to keep bees, and how much does it cost?  Join representatives from the Puget Sound Beekeepers Association as we learn about the Basics of Beekeeping!

The Sustainable West Seattle stormwater action team is organizing a site visit at the Bertschi School Living Building Science Wing, which is now under construction.  We will explore how the school plans to incorporate rainwater harvesting and solar energy into its design.  The building will also be used to teach students about passive ventilation, net-zero water and net-zero energy consumption.
