In Spring 2008, Highline Community College opened their new marine science center, one of only two such college-owned facilities in Washington with direct saltwater access, opened in Redondo Beach.

The $2 million Marine Science and Technology Center (MaST) of Highline Community College provides expanded learning opportunities for students, residents of South King County and the entire Puget Sound region.  Including their

Science on the Sound — Speaker Series 2009-2010

Scheduled the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month, now through June 2010. Talks run from 12 noon to approximately 1:00 pm. Please note, due to holidays, occasionally the timing may change.   • January 23, 2010 - How We can get Plastics out of the Sea, with Ron Hirschi, Writer and Marine Environmentalist www.ronhirschi.com
  • February 13, 2010 - Writing on the Sound, with Susan Landgraf, Poet and Professor, Highline Community College
  • February 27, 2010 - Northwest Weather and Renewable Energy with Andy Wappler, Weatherman and Renewable Energy Spokesman – Puget Sound Energy
  • March 13, 2010 - Modeling and visualization of shoreline erosion protection services provided by natural habitats
